There are plenty of reasons why screen printing has become the go-to method for creating printed T-shirts and other custom apparel items! One of our favorite reasons is that it’s very versatile and creates unique, vibrant products — which means we can help you take your vision and transfer it to fabric with a crisp, clean, long-lasting print.
Here at Lucky Dog Apparel in Pleasantville, we love to discuss the art of screen printing, and in today’s blog we want to share some of our knowledge with you — contact us if you have any questions and read to learn more!
Brief History Of Screen Printing
Screen printing can be traced back to silk screen printing in China and Japan around the late 900s AD. In this method of printing, a stencil was drawn onto silk fabric and the paint pressed through the fabric itself. Today, mesh screens are used for the printing.
Screen printing was modernized and went mainstream during the 1960s when artists like Andy Warhol began to use screen printing for paper art. Around the same time, screen printing began to be used on fabric to create graphic tees and bowling shirts.
Today, Lucky Dog Custom Apparel uses contemporary, high-tech versions of screen printing. Screen printing is continually evolving with the use of computer technology, new inks, and different types of fabrics.
How Does Screen Printing Work?
Screen printing involves stretching a mesh screen over a frame, the size of which depends on the size of the print you’re making. A blocking stencil is placed over the screen to block ink from going only into the areas that you want (the lines of your design). Then, ink is placed across the frame and pressed through the screen to transfer onto the fabric below.
Screen printing is very versatile, and it can be used on a variety of materials from wood or paper to the fabric we use for our custom apparel!
Why Screen Printing?
Screen printing is designed for bulk printing — which means you can order as many soccer jerseys as you want or add another to your order when someone new joins the team! The time-consuming part of the process is creating the blocking stencil from your custom design. After we have the stencil, we can print as many T-shirts, hats, polos, or whatever form of custom apparel you’re looking for!
Screen printing also allows us to keep costs down, which means lower prices for you. Several factors go into the final cost, like the number of colors, the type of apparel, and the complexity or size of the design. Ultimately, though, screen printing allows us to offer you the best possible price for high-quality product!
